Desiderata by Max Ehrmann is a 1927 prose poem. "Desiderata" (Latin: "desired things")
8. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
Yes, yes, yes. We know the world is full of trickery. Some of us have found ourselves victims of this trickery. Maybe from our own naiveté, innocence, trustfulness.
The world is also full of incompetence, mediocrity, laziness and ignorance. People like to take short cuts, make excuses and are apathetic to others plight. This current state of affairs is more threatening than just “trickery,” a practice of deception. The result is that more caution and vigilance are required on our part.
I feel it's incumbent upon me, more than ever, to cross check the information, be persistent and hold the source accountable. This is my responsibility, but it also creates additional work and research.
It is also my responsibility to self-reflect and self-examine. Am I part of the problem or part of the solution? Is having low expectations of others to be professional sabotaging them? At the very least, it doesn't give me the excuse to have low expectations of myself.
My approach is to prepare myself to be calm, reasonable and understanding. Usually, I've planned in advance the questions I plan to ask and the possible responses. Things seem to go much better if I've done my homework.
Today, when I have an issue that requires obtaining information from a customer service representative, I approach from a position of having low expectations. I assume that they are not necessarily good listeners and, therefore, will give me convenient, generic answers and information. I find this to be an unfortunate reality of modern living.
This is not to say that I don't respect them and their work. They are people who have a difficult job. It's monotonous and requires patience and an upbeat attitude. Their training requires that they read from a script. We know the upside and downside of this model. Experience has taught us how to navigate around the system in order to obtain the information we need.
Knowing that the world is full of trickery gives us an edge – a heads up! This knowledge cannot be separated from keeping interested in our own careers, however humble, if we agree that our business affairs are an integral part of our real posession in the changing fortunes of time.
