Subject: Southern Borders

Dear Senator Debbie Stabenow,

I am concerned citizen of Muskegon, Michigan. An ongoing debate that always stirs up is “the wall.” While I know that border security in our country needs major repair, is building “the wall” the right route to go? President Donald Trump heavily racifies the wall and stereotypes all illegal immigrants as terrible and law-breaking people. Our country began on harboring people in need. Since when are we neglecting our core values as labeled on the stature of liberty, our symbol for freedom: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

In my opinion, I feel that perhaps in addition to “de-racing” the wall, we should invest more time and money into allowing a more manageable citizenship process as well not breaking up families rather than a large fence. “The wall” has a bad reputation because of how the president boasts it. While it perhaps is needed, we need to look at it rather as keeping illegals out and encouraging the legal process to keep our citizens safe while allowing us to remain the safe harbor for those in need.

I would love to hear your stance and perspective on the issue as well as your involvement or influence on future funding and legislation regarding it. Thank you for your public service and time. I look forward to your response. If I do not hear from you by April 22, I will try to contact you again.

Sincerely,
Audrey

Response from Senator Debbie Stabenow

April 19, 2019

Dear Audrey,

Thank you for contacting me to share your views on the Trump Administration’s immigration policies.

Thousands of Michigan citizens have contacted me to share their concerns with our broken immigration system.
Border security is not about politics. It is about working across the aisle to effectively secure our borders by improving technology and addressing law enforcement and resource shortages.
Further, we need effective immigration reform that works for businesses and communities and protects the basic rights of immigrants who are such an important part of our state economy. The current complicated system hurts families who are trying to stay together and young people who came to the United States as children. This is why I have supported the DREAM Act and legislation that would prevent families from being separated at the border.
As Congress continues to debate issues related to immigration, I will keep your strong concerns in mind.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please continue to keep me informed about issues of concern to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Debbie Stabenow
United States Senator
